"I prefer to decant wines, both young and old. It is a sign of respect for old wines and a sign of confidence in young wines. Decanting old wines, just a few moments before they are served, helps to ensure that the wines' clarity and brilliance are not obscured by any deposit that may have developed over time. Decanting young wines several hours before they are served gives the wine a chance to bloom and attain a stage of development that normally requires years of aging." - (thoughts on decanting by Christian Moueix)

Vinum; Save 10% to 25%

Introduced in 1986, Vinum was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of grape varietals, quality, reasonable price and wide distribution. Vinum has had a permanent impact on the globe's wine glass culture. These glasses have proven to consumers and restaurateurs that the pleasure of consuming wine starts with the glass. The Vinum collection, developed by Georg Riedel on the principle that the content commands the shape, is the "Vitrum-Vinothek" for every day use. Vinum is made with over 24% lead crystal. “It takes a great deal of effort for a talented wine-maker to produce a good wine. These efforts can be ruined in no time if the wine is not served properly. The quality of the glass plays a crucial role here and Riedel produces the largest range of high quality glasses, specifically fine-tuned to fit the predominant wine varietals of the planet. Riedel makes it possible to fully appreciate all the nuances of aromas and tastes from the best wines of the world.” (MICHAEL BETTANE, GUIDE BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE).

Riedel Bordeaux; Save 10%

Perfect for young, full-bodied, complex red wines that are high in tannin. This glass smoothes out the rough edges, emphasizing the fruit, allowing wines to achieve a balance that would normally take years of ageing to acquire. The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully. The shape directs the flow of wine onto the zone of the tongue which perceives sweetness, thus accentuating the fruit and de-emphasizing the bitter qualities of the tannin. Recommended for: Bordeaux (red), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Tempranillo. All Riedel glasses are dishwasher safe. Lead Crystal and Machine Made

Riedel Burgundy; Save 10%

The large bowl captures all the nuances of the wine's aroma. Recommended for: Barbaresco, Barbera, Barolo, Burgundy (red), Gamay, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir. Dishwasher safe

Riedel Chianti/Zinfandel/Riesling Grand Cru; Save 10%

In 1993, Georg Riedel invited a distinguished panel of Chianti producers to join him for a series of workshops and tastings. Their aim was to develop the ideal glass shape to highlight all the nuances and complexity exhibited by Chianti. The resulting shape, the Riedel Chianti glass, tempers the alcohol, accentuates the rich berry and spice characteristics of Chianti, while gently interweaving the acidity, tannin and fruit to create the perfect balance of components. Recommended for: Zinfandel, Chianti. (Please note that this is the same shape as the Riesling glass) Dishwasher Safe.

Riedel Cuvee Prestige; Save 10%

The magic of this glass is its ability to highlight the full spectrum of aromas and flavors offered by fine champagnes and sparkling wines while preserving their elegant effervescence. Bubbles pose a challenge. How do you keep the sparkle in sparkling wine? The solution lies at the bottom of each Vinum Prestige Cuve Flute. Etched into each is a small dot, the purpose of which is to provide a slightly abraded surface that serves to generate a continuous stream of bubbles and prevent the champagne from going flat in the glass. Designed to highlight the bouquet of champagne, this light and well-balanced glass accentuates the complexity and richness of vintage champagnes. Dishwasher Safe.

Riedel Port; Save 10%

This glass highlights the rich fruit and sweetness characteristic of port. During a series of tastings conducted in London and Austria, some of the world's greatest port experts selected this glass as the ideal shape for vintage port. Dishwasher Safe.

Riedel Single Malt Whisky; Save 10%

In early 1992, a panel of Scotch whisky experts convened at Riedel's headquarters in Austria to test a range of nineteen different glass shapes. On the basis of this first selection, Georg Riedel undertook further research with the help of master distillers in Scotland. This research resulted in a glass that is an elongated thistle shape on a truncated stem. The design incorporates a small, slightly outturned lip which directs the spirit onto the tip of the tongue, where sweetness is perceived, and serves to emphasize the elegant creaminess of top quality single malt whisky. Dishwasher Safe.

Riedel Syrah/Shiraz; Save 10%

This shape was developed between 1993 and 1995 following tastings in the major Syrah growing regions, when most influential winemakers contributed their views on how the message of their wines should be put across. The wines made from the Australian grape variety Shiraz, give a deep purple, almost inky color. The nose resembles intense, rich blackberry aromas. The flavors on the palate show mouthfilling fruit, massive structure and a long sweet finish. The Syrah glass highlights the tannins, offering a perfect balance with the overwhelmingly concentrated fruit. Recommended for: Amarone, Blaufrankisch, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache, Hermitage rouge, Malbec, Mourvedre, Pinotage, Shiraz, Syrah.

Assorted Riedel Ranges

Sommeliers

In 1973, in Orvieto, Claus Riedel presented the world's first gourmet glass series developed with the help of the Associazione Italiana Sommeliers (A.I.S.). The series consisted of 10 sizes. Since then the world of wine has changed radically. Today, regions and continents are producing wines that didn't exist or were unknown 25 years ago. The Sommeliers series was developed further by his son Georg, into an all-embracing state-of-the-art wine glass collection. Praised in 1991 by Robert Parker, Jr., publisher of The Wine Advocate, as "The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make." Thanks to worldwide demand, Sommeliers is now the wineglass benchmark and the most successful series of hand-made glasses in the world. Each glass is individually made: the upper parts blown into a mould, the stem and base hand-crafted using methods developed at the time of Christ's birth. Our glass-makers invest their talent, know-how and meticulous craftsmanship in making glasses of the impeccable quality our consumers expect. Sommeliers are executed in over 24 lead crystal.

Grape @ Riedel

Riedel, known as the industry's innovator and creator of special wine glasses to enhance the flavors of the world's greatest wines, now presents the new grape@riedel. The wine friendly stemware line follows Sommeliers, Vinum, Vinum Extreme and "O" and represents the pinnacle in terms of translating a wine's message to the human senses. Each grape varietal carries its unique DNA (DNA typing is a valuable adjunct for verifying identity, particularly for vines in nurseries and foundation plantings), which denotes the wine's individual fingerprint. The Riedel glass designs are based on the exceptional characteristics of each grape variety, which in turn determines the shape, size and rim diameter of the bowl. The latest machine blown technology, in conjunction with the seamless pulled stem, offers a special design feature, which creates an indent on the bottom of the bowl, reflecting the light and adding another dimension to the lively color of wine.

Ouverture

Introduced in 1989, "Ouverture" is Riedel's uncomplicated entry level series for customers who appreciate good, reasonably priced wine. No types of grape varieties or wine-growing regions disconcert the buyer. This is a range made for 'drinking pleasure'. Ouverture is lead free. Ideal for everyday use, Ouverture glasses offer perfectly shaped wine glasses at competitive prices.

Vinum Extreme

Vinum Extreme is the latest development in Riedel's machine-made "Gourmet Glass Concept". The inspiration for this development can be attributed to three factors: (1) The steady improvement in wine quality, to more dense, more concentrated and more perfect wines, which call for the development of new shapes. (2) To translate a wines message in a perfect way. (3) To the progess that has been made in the features and quality of machine production.

Riedel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riedel Riedel (pronounced REE-d(?)l), is a manufacturer of high-quality crystal wine glasses and related glass products based in Kufstein, Austria. Originally established in Bohemia in 1756, the company has been owned by the same family for more than 250 years. Georg Riedel (11th generation) and Maximilian Riedel (12th generation) currently head up the euro 265 million per year glass business. Riedel is the originator of the concept of having many different glasses with characteristics designed to enhance specific types of wines. These range from the short, narrow-mouthed port glass, holding around 250 mL, to the balloon-shaped Burgundy glass, capable of holding an entire bottle of wine. In theory, the different shapes direct the wine to different parts of the mouth, emphasizing the best characteristics of the class of wines. Another characteristic of Riedel glasses is that they are designed to hold a small amount of wine relative to the volume of the glass, allowing the aroma of the wine to collect in the bowl. Typically a normal "glass of wine" will occupy about a third or less of a Riedel stem. The handmade mouth-blown crystal wine glass collection, Riedel Sommelier, is regarded as the finest in the world by many wine professionals. The critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. says, "The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make." While the product line started with the Sommelier series (which has earned its place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York), it also now includes significantly less expensive machine blown-crystal as well as ordinary glass. The principle of specialized stemware having been firmly established by Riedel's keen design sense and marketing, similar glasses are now widely available from other manufacturers. Riedel's latest releases include the "O" collection of varietal-specific stemless wine glasses and the Vitis and Tyrol range (Tyrol being introduced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Riedel being in the Austrian Tyrol, where they relocated to, following WW2). The Riedel business was founded in 1756 in Bohemia and has been in the ownership of the same family ever since. In 2004 Riedel acquired the F X Nachtmann Group and, with it, one of its biggest rivals at the time, Spiegelau.
